Subject Violence during demonstrations
Sir,
I want to express my views regarding the recent violence in parts of North East India through the columns of your newspaper.
In a democratic country like India, every citizen has a right to express his views on any issue. Freedom of expression is a fundamental right. Whenever there is any decision by the government, all the citizens have their right to express their consent for the decision or protest against it in a peaceful manner. A peaceful demonstration is the best way to communicate the feelings of the masses to the authorities, but nowadays, peaceful demonstrations turn into violent ones. People resort to violence and damage public property.
In my opinion, people resort to violence as a last resort, when repeated pleas to address their problems are not attended to by the authorities. The Gujjar issue, Gorkhaland issue and other reservation issues are long standing issues, which should have been resolved a long time ago, but the government lets them fester till they explode out of control.
I hope the government will improve their reaction time to such issues in future.

The ‘Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao’ scheme aims to generate awareness and improve the efficiency of delivery of welfare services meant for women and girls. According to census data, the Child Sex Ratio (0-6 years) in India was 927 girls per 1000 boys in 2001, which dropped to 918 girls for every 1000 boys in 2011. This is alarming, to say the least.
Speaking on the International Day of the Girl Child, the Prime Minister called for eradication of female foeticide and invited suggestions from the citizens on the government portal. The objectives of this campaign are to

• Prevent gender biased sex selective elimination by outlawing foetus sex determination in hospitals
  and dispensaries.
• Ensure survival & protection of the girl child.
• Ensure education of the girl child, using the Right to Education, mid-day meal scheme and other measures.
• Improve the nutrition status of the girl child by various incentive schemes and better publicity.
• Promote a protective environment for the girl child.

This jcampaign will be followed up with other schemes implemented by the state governments to ensure a better future for the women of the country.

Our society works with the help of our brains, not due to beauty. Intelligent people, meaning brainy people, make laws and regulations which are followed by everyone. In fact, the most important organ of a man is his brain. It is the brain of a man which has made impossible things possible, tough work easy, designed conveniences for us and also extended our lives by important medical research.
How easy and comfortable our lives have become! All conveniences are available for purchasing according to one’s pocket. TV sets are installed in almost every home, so nobody needs to go outside the home for entertainment. While travelling in a car, bus, train or by any other means, we can talk to anyone and anywhere through mobile phones. All these have been made available due to our excellent brains.
Now let us talk of beauty. Some say that it is only skin deep, while others say that it turns into ugliness with the passage of time. But beauty is not giving any benefit to the people of the world. What is its use if others are not benefited by it? Hence, beauty stands nowhere, when it is matched with the brain. Thank you!

Today, lam hereto highlight the responsibilities of a good citizen. We all think that we are not littering, not spoiling public property, so we are good citizens. But sadly we are not adding anything for the overall betterment of the country. As responsible citizens, we should obey rules and regulations and ask others to do the same too. Also, one should always be alert and cautious at public places about any suspicious persons who may damage our environment. Everyone should help in protecting the environment and contribute to welfare activities. We should be honest, generous and helpful. When a citizen enjoys the benefits of rights given to him, he should also fulfil his responsibility towards the nation. Kindness and idealism should come from the inner self and not from the fear of punishment.

Pollution Control, the Need of the Hour

Pollution is contamination of land, air and water. Plastics are a big nuisance, as they cause the maximum pollution. They never degrade. Ifwe burn them, they pollute the air. If we dump them in rivers or oceans, plastics pollute the water and also kill marine life. Thus we must minimise our use of plastics. Chemical fertilisers used by farmers are another source of pollution to land and water. In order to check pollution from industries, the polluted effluents from factories should be treated before they are disposed in rivers or oceans. Waste plastics and other waste materials should be recycled. Chemical industries should not be allowed to be set up on the banks of rivers.
To reduce air pollution, chambers should be made for trapping solid particles emitted from chimnel Lofty smoke stakes should be built. New techniques should be adopted in motor vehicles to reduce exhaust pollution.
In view of the great danger to mankind, many countries in the world have passed laws to prevent pollution. But it has been seen that anti-pollution laws are not being obeyed everywhere. These should be stringently implemented if we are to survive.
